Dress Code for Teachers:

  • Wear dance-adjacent stretchy clothing that is easy to move in and allows students to see your lines (especially ankles and feet, although knees would be good as well).

  • Wear a sports bra, and/or a leotard to provide support and avoid cleavage.

  • No midriff should be visible.

  • If your bottoms are tight (e.g. legging), wear a longer top for modesty (covering your bum).

  • Hair should be tied back neatly off the face. It does not need to be a ballet bun (though it can be), but you should avoid hair swinging around or coming in contact with the students.

  • A good guideline for looking put together while still being modest is that if you wear something baggier on the top, keep the bottom fitted (and vice versa).

  • Wear appropriate dance footwear for the style you are teaching. You can wear dance sneakers for support during longer teaching days and with older students, but be sure to remove them to show younger students the correct articulation of the feet.

Dress Code for Teaching Assistants:

  • Wear dance tights and any colour leotard.

  • For Ballet classes, add a wrap skirt (you can use your own or borrow one from Arise.)

  • For Jazz and Contemporary classes, wear black dance shorts.

  • For Hip Hop classes, you can wear joggers on top of your dance clothes.

  • Wear the footwear that goes with the style of dance you are teaching (e.g. ballet shoes for ballet, jazz shoes for jazz, running shoes for Hip Hop, etc.).

  • On cold days, you may add black leggings under your skirt/shorts and a nicely fitted zip-up, sweater or vest.

  • Tie your hair neatly back off your face. It does not need to be a ballet bun (though it can be), but avoid hair swinging around, or coming in contact with the students.

  • Do not wear anything baggy (except for Hip Hop), and do not wear socks

Dress Code for Students

  • Check the dress code in the student handbook to see what your students should be wearing in each class. Let the front desk staff know if a student doesn’t have the right items so we can follow up with the parents. This includes the correct leotard, tights, hairstyle, and shoes.

Music for Classes

  • Syllabus classes: Please use the appropriate RAD music. Click here to access the folder.

  • Open Ballet: Use classical ballet music with good tempo. If it comes from a movie, musical, or other genre, please be sure that it comes from a positive source, so that, if a parent or student looked up the artist, album, movie, or musical, it would be appropriate.

  • Jazz, Hip Hop, and Contemporary: Please mainly use Christian music or appropriate instrumental music. Songs from other sources are acceptable if you use use them once in a while and if they come from a positive source, so that, if a parent or student looked them up, they would be appropriate.

  • Be careful that your songs are age-appropriate even within the genre of Christian music. Listen to what the song is saying and ask yourself if the topic is appropriate for the student’s development.
